Aiming to become a vital part of the international scientific area, INL provides a high-tech research environment addressing the major societal challenges of today with emphasis on Ageing population & Well-being, Mobility &Urban Living and a Safe& Secure Society. In particular, INL focus on nanotechnology applied to the areas of Health, Environmental & Food control, ICT and Energy, as well as on the more fundamental areas of Quantum Science, Materials and Technology.
INL is the only truly International Institute of Nanotechnology, providing the platform for being a leader in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in the world. In particular, INL has a vibrant and multicultural group of researchers and a worldclass infrastructure, which is an attractor for any institution of high reputation. Due to its geography, INL has close links to Portugal, Spain and the European Union, including their academic and industrial sectors. Furthermore, Portugal´s economy is traditionally strong in specific sectors and industries that due to the core technology, raw materials, quality and market share are interesting from a world perspective.
INL is essentially working along three axes: at the base of our operation is the pursuit of excellent multidisciplinary science (explore). Through our science understanding we will be able to deploy, not only our own research and technology, but also knowledge that has already been produced, and to formulate offers that will be attractive to our business and scientific environment. Finally, by articulating the research knowledge we will provide insights and better understanding to the societal stakeholders.
INL will be recognized internationally as a research intensive institute that is distinguished by its focus on the translation of knowledge into societal and economic benefit.
